Royal Air Force Typhoon fighter aircraft have operated alongside French aircraft in a joint strike on an hidden munitions depot in Syrian territory used by the IS group, according to the UK's MoD.

The facility, pinpointed through intelligence, was assessed as storing arms and explosives, the statement said, and was positioned in mountainous terrain just to the north of Palmyra in central Syria.

"The RAF jets utilized precision-guided Paveway IV munitions to strike a several entry passages down to the facility... initial indications are that the objective was successfully hit," the MoD said.

There was no sign of any harm to civilians in the attack late on Saturday and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

IS - referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced jihadist rule over parts of Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike shows our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with allied nations, to eradicate any re-emergence of Daesh and their violent and radical beliefs in the area," Britain's Defence Chief the Defence Secretary stated.

RAF aircraft have carried out overwatch operations over Syrian airspace to "deter any efforts to regroup" of Islamic State after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.

"I want to thank the personnel of British forces participating in this mission for their skill and their bravery," he added. "They were part of a great many British personnel deployed over Christmas and New Year. This mission, to take out terrorist threats who endanger our safety, shows how our armed forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security at home and powerful internationally."

In December, the American forces carried out what it termed a "major assault" targeting Islamic State objectives in the country, subsequent to an attack resulted in the deaths of two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Iraq and Syria.
