Democrats Condemn Trump After He Claims They Should Face Death Penalty
Democratic officials demonstrated fury after Donald Trump accused a group of Democratic congress members of being "traitors" and asserted they should be detained and penalized "through capital punishment" following their publication of a disputed video.
The Message That Provoked the Controversy
The recorded message, released on Tuesday, showcases six Democratic congress members who previously acted in defense or intelligence roles.
"Similar to us, you all swore an vow to protect and support this founding document," the officials declared in the short video. "Currently, the dangers to our democratic foundation don't only come from overseas, but from domestically. Our regulations are unambiguous, you can decline unlawful commands, you can refuse improper directives, you have to decline unlawful commands. No one has to carry out directives that violate the legal system or our national charter."
Trump's Angry Reply
The recorded statement seemed to prompt a heated reply from the former president.
On Thursday morning, Trump published on Truth Social: "This represents SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR AT THE HIGHEST LEVEL. Each one of these betrayers to our Country should be ARRESTED AND PUT ON TRIAL."
In a separate message, he stated: "This is really serious, and Harmful to our United States. Their words cannot be enabled to stand. SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR FROM TRAITORS!!! LOCK THEM UP???"
In a subsequent publication, he stated: "SEDITIOUS BEHAVIOR, subject to punishment by DEATH!" He also reposted a comment that said: "HANG THEM GEORGE WASHINGTON WOULD !!"
Democratic Officials Answer
Following Trump's comments on Thursday, House Democratic leader published a unified statement condemning the remarks.
"Political violence has no place in this nation," they declared. "Representatives who were featured in the video all acted our United States with exceptional loyalty and honor. We strongly condemn Donald Trump's offensive and risky threats of violence against elected officials, and appeal to Republican lawmakers to forcefully do the same."
The Democratic leaders also mentioned that they had been in communication with security officials "to ensure the safety of these representatives and their relatives."
"Donald Trump must immediately take down these radical online messages and retract his violent language before he leads to violence," the declaration added.
Representatives' Defiant Response
The lawmakers who participated in the video also issued a statement.
"We are former service members and defense specialists who care for this United States and took an pledge to safeguard and support the constitution of the United States," they said. "This commitment is permanent, and we aim to maintain it. No intimidation, intimidation, or promotion of aggression will prevent us from that fundamental obligation."
"The significant point is that the former president deems it subject to penalty by death for us to reiterate the statutes," they added. "Armed forces members should understand that we have their support as they execute their oath to the constitution and responsibility to adhere to only lawful orders. It is not only the right thing to do, but also our duty."
They continued: "The entire nation must come together and denounce the former president's calls for our murder and ideological conflict. This is a period for principled stance."
Further Governmental Responses
The Democratic Senate minority leader also denounced Trump's comments and published on digital platforms: "Let's be crystal clear: the ex-commander in chief is calling for the death of government members."
He added: "This constitutes an outright THREAT. All senators, every Representative, all citizens – regardless of party – should condemn this immediately and unconditionally."
The Republican House speaker defended Trump's allegation that the Democrats had been involved in "treason", describing the video as "wildly inappropriate", commenting: "This represents very risky, you have important representatives of the government advising military personnel to disobey orders, I think that is unprecedented in US history."
The GOP official also allegedly told the press that in what he read of Trump's messages, Trump was "explaining the violation of treason" but that "lawyers have to examine the terminology and establish all that."
Executive Branch Statement
During a executive branch meeting on later that day, when asked by a reporter, "Is the president want to execute elected officials?", the administration spokesperson replied: "Absolutely not."
"It's important to note about what the ex-commander in chief is responding to," the representative declared. "We see active officials of the American legislature who worked together to arrange a video message to members of the US military, to serving soldiers urging them to defy the executive's legal commands."
She said: "The integrity of our defense system rests on the hierarchy, and if that chain of command is compromised, it can result in people getting killed, it can cause disorder, and precisely what these elected officials ... are essentially supporting."
