The esteemed football figure has declared that he is not seeking a comeback in football management, explaining that it would be challenging to duplicate the unique sense of purpose he experienced as England’s manager.

He indicated his intention to focus his energy toward working with young people and combating what he described as a widespread pessimistic outlook currently existing in the country.

Pursuing Different Paths Away from Coaching

Speaking on air, the manager was prompted regarding speculation linking him with vacant management roles in the English football and other leagues.

“Leading my country gave my work in football a deeper meaning and purpose,” he replied. “It will be tough to match that experience. After nearly four decades in the game, I’m now exploring new fields where I can contribute positively.”

Dedication to Mentorship

Leading up to the release of his forthcoming publication, his new work on leadership, he emphasized that he is “very passionate” about providing role models for teenagers, applying experiences from his time as leader of the England team from 2016 and 2024, as well as his experiences as a parent.

The leader believes that his experience coaching England, during which the team shifted from being deeply unpopular to greatly admired, holds wider relevance.

“Initially, the relationship with supporters was severely strained,” he noted. “Many perceived the squad as arrogant, but we managed to change that perception. I witnessed firsthand how the team could unite individuals from all backgrounds.”

Family Life and Shaping the Next Generation

Reflecting on his role as a parent, he observed: “You want to give your kids the best possible start, but there is a point when they don’t want to listen to parents any more. I experienced that in my house in the same way everybody else will … but I do think this is an important space for us.”

He added: “A downbeat tone surrounds the nation now, and it’s essential to provide hope and advice to the younger generation. While talent abounds, accessing suitable mentors and peer networks is crucial, since these factors heavily influence lifelong outcomes.”

Togetherness Beyond Conflict

The former manager insisted that “what brings the nation together outweighs what pulls it apart” but that the public discourse often emphasizes conflict.

“The reasons for public dissatisfaction are clear,” he said. “Financial struggles affect numerous communities, fueling calls for transformation. Yet, I’ve observed the capacity to bring the nation together. During the pandemic, I witnessed neighbors helping each other—that’s when the UK excels, demonstrating strength and unity in adversity.”

Southgate’s new release, titled Dear England, is set to provide deeper reflections on guidance and country pride based on his notable time in football.
