Student Society President-Elect Ousted Following Charlie Kirk Comments
The future president of the Oxford Union has been removed from his position after failing a vote of confidence that came after his controversial online comments about the conservative activist.
The vote against George Abaraonye achieved the necessary two-thirds threshold to oust him from his position, according to an statement from the organization.
Contentious Posts
The dispute erupted after Mr Abaraonye reportedly posted messages on online platforms that seemed to celebrate the death of Charlie Kirk, who was shot dead while speaking at a college in the United States.
According to sources, one Instagram post reportedly stated "Charlie Kirk got shot loool" - using an extended form of the acronym for 'laughing out loud'.
The student leader is also reported to have posted in a WhatsApp chat with fellow students appearing to express approval of the event.
Election Results
The vote of confidence took place over the recent days, with results revealed on Tuesday.
Society announcements indicated that over twelve hundred votes were cast supporting no confidence, while 501 were opposed the motion.
The announcement confirmed that the future president was considered to have resigned in accordance with the society's regulations.
Procedural Disputes
Voting operations were informally suspended early on Monday after the returning officer was reportedly subjected to "obstruction, intimidation, and unwarranted hostility" from several representatives.
In a statement, the student claimed that the count had been halted because election administrators believed "no legitimate and true result could be reached as a result of process errors".
His response unequivocally denied that any representative acting for the student had engaged in intimidating or disruptive behavior.
Continuing Controversy
The president-elect maintained that extremely serious issues had been referred to the disciplinary committee and that he remained the elected leader.
His comment added that George was "grateful and honored to have the backing of well in excess of a majority of students at Oxford" who voted to have a "secure voting process and oppose efforts to undermine the electoral process".
Opponents have argued that any failure to remove him would "demonstrate internationally that the society has prioritized politics over principles".
External Responses
On recently, Kirk's former chief of staff presented an public message to the society on The Charlie Kirk Show broadcast.
The letter accused the society of becoming a place where "presidents of the union openly applaud the assassination of a ideological rival".
The communication warned that if Mr Abaraonye were to remain in post, Kirk's allies would "personally contact every American political speaker who has ever graced the union's chamber and urge them never again to lend their name".
The Oxford Union had previously condemned Mr Abaraonye's remarks after Kirk's death and confirmed that complaints submitted about him had been forwarded for disciplinary proceedings.
The student leader had been one of several students to debate with Kirk at the union in May.
