The Brothers from the Dagestani Region Making Their Mark in Mixed Martial Arts and at Manchester United.

Ibragim Ibragimov smiles as he considers how his family's life has evolved since relocating to England from Dagestan in 2017.

"I adore it here," the Professional Fighters League competitor states.

"My father and I frequently comment, 'this was the nation I ought to have been born in.'"

The young man left his homeland in the North Caucasus of Russia because his father believed a relocation covering more than 3,000 miles promised superior professional opportunities for him and his siblings.

The initial idea was for Ibragim and his three brothers – Amir (17), Gazik (16), and Muhammad (15) – to finish school before enrolling in one of the nation's universities.

However, life now looks somewhat different for the Ibragimov household.

Ibragim is now a pro mixed martial arts athlete and is seen as one of the leading talents in the PFL, a major MMA organization.

His brothers have chosen a different route in sport and have all been contracted by Manchester United – with Amir vying for a position in the first team.

"The primary goal for us is to extract the maximum from our chosen fields," explains Ibragim.

"I want them to play for every one of the finest teams in the world. Now it is Man United, in the future it might be a different team."

From Wrestlers to Soccer Prodigies

Located in southern Russia, Dagestan holds a mythical reputation among fight fans for producing a slew of UFC champions in the past few years.

The region has a long tradition in grappling, thriving in the sambo discipline and creating numerous Olympic and world champions.

This achievement is no accident, though, as children from the region are frequently pushed to begin fighting, particularly wrestling, almost as soon as they can walk.

"As a a kid, my dad was constantly instructing me and my little brothers that we had to be powerful, first to defend yourself, your relatives, and your friends," states Ibragim.

"So we all became accustomed to fighting, and which is why people understands how to fight in Dagestan. It's unsurprising."

"Amir was a excellent wrestler. You can observe the move from wrestling to football; clearly, it helped my younger brothers a lot."

"Some of the footballers he comes up against don't have the identical base he possesses. That's why he's stocky, strong and incredibly driven – because of wrestling."

Amir was only nine years old when he was being tested at Sheffield United. Not knowing of his real age, coaches placed him with boys five years older.

He was not intimidated by the oversight and was perfectly comfortable holding his own against older players because of his experience in wrestling.

"They thought Amir and I were the same age, so the story goes," says Ibragim.

Amir was recruited, along with Ibragim's younger brothers Gazik and Muhammad.

The family's time in South Yorkshire was short-lived, though, as just weeks after joining the Blades, Manchester United learned of Amir's talent and he moved over the Pennines consequently.

"They faced Manchester United in a tournament and Amir netted a spectacular free-kick," says Ibragim.

"One of their talent spotters saw him play and picked him immediately."

Half a dozen years after joining the Manchester United club and at the age of 15, Amir was one of the youngest players in the club's records to train with the first team when he did so in April 2023.

"Know what he said to me? 'Here is where I should be'," Ibragim says.

"Is he able to be a first-team player for Manchester United? Absolutely. They should allow all the young players play now."

"In my opinion they would play less effectively than the existing first-team players. I believe the youngsters are more motivated than the present first-team players."

Following that, Gazik and Muhammad, the latter once on the books of Manchester City, have likewise made the move to Manchester United.

"Gazik, this kid is talented," adds Ibragim.

"He learned every skill quicker than the others. He's a solid defender. He's going to be similar to a modern Rio Ferdinand for Man United."

'The Goal' to Fight at Old Trafford

Ibragim has also moved to Manchester and spends most of his days perfecting his MMA skills at Manchester Top Team.

In August, he spent three weeks in his homeland at Khabib Nurmagomedov's gym, assisting Islam Makhachev prepare for a November UFC title fight.

"I never have thought I would be training under Khabib," Ibragim admits.

"He was the greatest fighter in the world – and we always used to idolize him when we were growing up."

"Today, I'm here in his gym and training with Islam Makhachev."

Recently working with two UFC titleholders from Dagestan, it is unsurprising Ibragim states he is eager to win a world title of his own one day.

But that does not prevent him from sometimes dreaming of playing for United and walking out on the historic turf at Old Trafford, much like his brothers.

"I had a PlayStation at home and I constantly used to play as Man United, scoring with Cristiano Ronaldo, Wayne Rooney and Carlos Tevez," he recalls.

"Now, for my brothers to be Man United players, it's similar to a dream come true."

"An event at Old Trafford? It's a dream for me. I was discussing with the PFL officials about it to see if they could make it happen. It would be enormous."
