UN Removes Restrictions on Syrian President Prior to Presidential Visit

United Nations Security Council members approved to an American proposal to lift sanctions on Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa before his White House visit the following week.

He was appointed provisional head of state following his leadership in an insurgent campaign that ousted Bashar al-Assad in the final month of 2024, concluding 13 years of domestic strife.

America's diplomat UN ambassador Mike Waltz stated the United Nations delivered "an emphatic political statement" that recognised Syria was in "a fresh chapter" since Assad was deposed.

Sharaa was under global penalties in his role as head of the religious organization Hayat Tahrir al-Sham (HTS), previously associated with al-Qaeda. America delisted HTS from a list of global extremist entities in July.

Further Restrictions Lifted

The UN also removed penalties against the Syrian interior official the interior minister.

The nation's top diplomat applauded the lifting of these restrictions, stating online: "Syria expresses its appreciation to Washington and allied countries for their support the country and its population."

Upcoming White House Meeting

The Syrian leader's Washington trip at the start of the week occurs subsequent to President Trump said the Syrian leader achieved "significant advancement" in establishing peace to the war-torn country.

Following their discussion, the US president stated Sharaa had "a legitimate chance to unify the country".

Both presidents held discussions on their first occasion during May, while the American president was in Saudi Arabia while traveling through the Middle East.

Subsequent to that discussion, America's leader characterized him as a "resilient figure" possessing a "powerful background".

The HTS organization he led operated as the terrorist network's partner inside the country until he severed ties back in 2016.

Previous US Visit

This week's diplomatic engagement will not be the president's debut journey to the United States in the current year. In September, he made history as the pioneering Middle Eastern head of state to present to the global assembly at UN headquarters for nearly six decades.

Throughout his presentation, he said Syria was "regaining its deserved status within the global community" and expressed solidarity with Palestinian citizens in Gaza.
