As stated by a high-ranking defense official, the US armed forces executed a lethal kinetic engagement on a vessel in the eastern Pacific, killing four individuals.

“Joint Task Force Southern Spear carried out a deadly attack on a craft linked to a Designated Terrorist Organization in international waters. Surveillance verified the vessel was traveling along a known narco-trafficking route and was engaged in narco-trafficking operations. All four male narco-terrorists were killed, and no US military forces were injured.”

Context and Recent Actions

The statement comes a day after a declaration regarding a blockade of all sanctioned oil tankers entering and leaving Venezuela. In that announcement on online platforms, the US president alleged Venezuela of using oil revenues to fund drug trafficking and criminal activities, pledging to escalate the military presence.

Only on Tuesday, US defense officials stated it had carried out strikes on three boats it accused of smuggling narcotics in the Pacific, killing eight people. Since 2 September, over 20 strikes have resulted in the deaths of at least 99 individuals, most off the coast of Venezuela.

Government Defends Tactics Amid Pressure

The administration has encountered growing demands to release video of a 2 September vessel attack. But, the defense secretary have refused to do so. The administration has supported its efforts as a successful operation, arguing it has prevented drugs from entering US shores and has dismissed concerns that it is exceeding the bounds of lawful warfare.

Although the administration has said the campaign is about stopping drugs destined for the US, comments from a top official appeared to suggest a broader geopolitical objective. In a recently published interview, the senior advisor remarked the leader “aims to keep on destroying vessels until Venezuela's president surrenders or concedes.”

This suggests the military campaign may be linked to a strategy to oust Venezuela's sitting government.
